Berylcookprints is owned and operated by Alexander Gallery, who have been Beryl’s official publishers for over 30 years. We hold the largest collection of Beryl Cook prints in the world and specialise in sourcing rare sold out editions for collectors.
History of Publishing
Beryl first came to national prominence in 1976 when the Sunday Times published a major article about her and her paintings. Within days we were meeting her in Plymouth and subsequently published her first signed limited edition The Four Hungry Cats in 1977. The Art Class followed in 1979 and then the publishing programme began in earnest with at least one new title being released each year.
Beryl painted what she wanted, not what anyone else wanted, and as her publishers we did not dream of trying to influence her painting in the way that many publishers do with their artists. Although she was aware of her success she was also aware of the negative aspects of over-exposure and this is why she was always so careful about the number of her pictures that were published as limited editions.
In January 2009 the 41st title Drinkies was released as the first unsigned limited edition print. It was Beryl’s express wish and that of her family that her pictures should continue to be made available for reproduction after her death and Drinkies was followed in 2010 by The Last Gasp and in 2011 by Dancing the Black Bottom. Further posthumous publications are planned.
Availability
This website is constantly monitored and updated; if a picture is shown as being available then that picture is in stock and ready for immediate sale. If we don’t have a copy then we clearly say so stating ‘subject to availability’. Unlike some galleries we do not offer pictures we do not have. If you are searching for a particular title and we do not have one in stock do please tell us via the Contact Us part of the site and we will record your interest and give you first refusal if and when we have sourced a copy.
Original Paintings
We also sell Beryl’s original paintings through our main site www.alexander-gallery.co.uk.
